FIFTH GRADE NEWSLETTER

August 4th - August 8th, 2014

Math:

We will start with Unit 1 in math. Unit 1 builds on students' understanding of factors and products to explore such topics as prime and composite numbers, square numbers, and the square roots of square numbers. The objectives for the week are: Acquaint students with the content and organization of their math book, review rectangular arrays, and to find factor pairs for a number. Next week students will learn to classify prime and composite numbers and be introduced to square numbers and the exponent key on the calculator. We are projecting the Unit 1 test for Friday, August 15th.

Here are the concepts that will be assessed on the Unit 1 test.

·Factor numbers

·Identify place value in large numbers

·Identify prime numbers

·Use exponential notation to write square numbers

·Draw arrays of factor pairs

·Solve and compare multiplication facts

·Know the divisibility rules for 2,3,5,6,9, and 10

Science:

This week in Science, we will ask the age old question "What is a Scientist?" We will explore all of the things that scientists do (we call them "processes"), start to talk about safety in the classroom, and learn about the tools we will be using this year. We will also set up our Science Notebooks, where we will be keeping all of our notes, lab sheets, and important scientific information we collect throughout the year.
