FIFTH GRADE WEEKLY NEWS

IMPORTANT DATES AND REMINDERS:

Language Arts - Last Friday, we spent time working on six-word memoirs. Students were encouraged to answer the following questions by using only six words:
Who am I?
What inspires me?
What are my hopes and dreams?
What do I want to contribute to the world?
What message do you want to send the world?

It was a challenge, but students came up with some great ideas! Students will spend some time this week using their six word memoir to create a personalized banner for their blog.

Tomorrow, we will give students quiz on chapters 8-11 in The Kite Fighters. We hope to complete the novel by this Friday and begin to work on final projects.

Math - This week students will continue with unit 2 in Math. We will explore different methods of subtraction and continue practicing making magnitude estimates when adding, subtracting, and multiplying. Students will review vocabulary associated with chance events and learn how to use the probability meter. Unit 1 math tests were sent home last week and should be returned with a parent signature this week. Please ask your child about the test, if you haven’t already seen it! After-school math help starts tomorrow, Tuesday, August 27th Mr. Ro’s room. After-school math help is reserved for students needing extra help in math. If your child had difficulty with the unit 1 math test, after-school math is a great place to revisit those difficult concepts. Please make sure your child knows how to get home following the after school activity. .

Science – Students will begin with chapter 1 in the science book this week. Some of the questions we will answer this week include: what are cells, how living things are made of cells, and why cells have different jobs. Students will be reading from the science book, looking at cells in microscopes, and playing a game called cell mates to learn more about cells. Important vocabulary covered this week: cell, microscopic, organism, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, protist.

Leitura: continuação do livro A Ilha Perdida, da autora Maria José Dupré; leitura do livro escolhido na Roda de Biblioteca.
Escrita: escrita de narrativas em 1ª ou 3ª pessoa, com ênfase na descrição de cenário e personagens.
Gramática: estudo de ortografia – letras que representam o som /Z/.
Projeto “Amigos na Ilha Perdida”: trabalho em grupos; pesquisa e escrita sobre o tema escolhido.
Projeto “Caminhos do Tietê”: início das investigações sobre o Rio Tietê.
