Fifth Grade News: August 12th - 16th

IMPORTANT DATES AND REMINDERS:

August 15th – Open House at 7:00 pm

Language Arts -  In Reading, we will continue to move forward with The Kite Fighters.  We will examine the the story element of "setting" and discuss how the setting can give readers insight into how characters behave and interact with each other. There will be an open book reading quiz on chapters 1-4 on Tuesday.  Finally, we will spend some time this week talking about final assessments for The Kite Fighters.  Students will given a choice between two projects that will demonstrate their understanding of both character and setting in the novel.  Here is a link to the project summaries.  More detailed information will be sent to students via Google docs once students have chosen a project to complete.

In Writing, we will continue to generate ideas for personal narratives and begin to look at qualities of good narratives.  On Wednesday, we will begin our Word Study program.  

Math -    This week we will continue on Unit 1 in our math journal.  Students will learn to classify prime and composite numbers and be introduced to square numbers and the exponent key on the calculator.  Students will also learn about the concept of square roots or unsquaring numbers.  

We will finish the week introducing students to prime factorization.  Students will take home a study guide and review on Wednesday to help them prepare for the Unit 1 test which will be given on FRIDAY, August 16th.

Science –  An old adage states: "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand." The last part of this statement is the essence of our science class this week.  Students will be involved in tasks of discovery using the hand lens and microscope as well as learning the steps of the scientific method while trying to answer the question:  What would an ant eat?

Escrita: reflexão sobre o trabalho em grupo desenvolvido na semana passada.
Gramática: relembrar os códigos de correção de textos e como fazer a reescrita corrigindo os aspectos gramaticais apontados pela professora.
Leitura: início do livro “A Ilha Perdida”, da autora Maria José Dupré.
Projeto: início do projeto “Amigos na Ilha Perdida” – apresentação do projeto e divisão de grupos.

Na 6ª-feira cada aluno fará, individualmente, apresentação do livro lido durante as férias.

PLA - This week as we get to know each other better we are going to work on basic vocabulary and greetings in Portuguese and also work based on the book "Junta , separa e guarda".  On Friday we are going to share our readings during vacation.
